Bertie’s cafe is situated in HMP Lincoln’s visitors hall. It also has a 24 seater restaurant that runs adjacent, which enables both prison staff and visitors to utilise the space. This is currently the only training kitchen that serves both staff, prisoners and their families on a weekly basis. The added dimension of other prisoners earning the privilege of having a sit-down meal with their family helps to maintain family-ties, which could have a generational impact.
The restaurant and kitchen were refurbished by The Right Course, PeoplePlus and the prison in January 2023 with the first cohort starting their training in April 2023 and the restaurant opening it’s doors in May 2023. Since opening 34 learners have started the course, 52% have completed their NVQ level 2 at Bertie’s with one current learner starting their level 3. Of the 16 released, 63% are employed and a further 25% are currently being helped to find employment.

Learners regularly engage with hospitality employers and industry experts through a programme of workshops, demonstrations and employer-led sessions. Recent contributions have come from Greene King, Sir Thomas Paine Hotel, Washingborough Hall Hotel and Hilton, providing valuable industry insight and helping learners understand the skills, standards and opportunities available within the sector.
These partnerships continue to create meaningful employment pathways, with former learners progressing into roles with employers including Bespoke Hotels, Wagamama, Marston’s and Cheesy Pig.
The catering operation has also seen significant development following a recent change in management. The introduction of a new pre-order and takeaway service, alongside a redesigned menu, has enhanced both the customer experience and training opportunities available to learners. Featuring traditional pub favourites, rotating weekly specials, a fresh salad bar and a range of homemade cakes, the refreshed offer has increased engagement from prison staff while enabling learners to gain hands-on experience across a wider range of kitchen, catering and customer service activities.
